It’s taken me an embarrassingly long time to ful

It’s taken me an embarrassingly long time to fully understand what it means to be an ally. Growing up in a religion that condemns homosexuality and then making the choice to turn around and saying “no, actually I don’t believe that” was uncomfortable and it shouldn’t have been. And I’m sorry. I have always accepted and loved my LGBTQ+ friends and family but I didn’t really know how to BE the ally they needed me to be.
• Being an ally means being uncomfortable with derogatory language and calling people out for saying awful things.
• Being an ally means listening to your LGBTQ+ friends and and allowing them to use their voice.
• Being an ally means learning about issues in your community and being active.
• As a photographer, being an ally means not treating my LGBTQ+ clients any differently than my hetero clients. It also means loving when they are comfortable showing me their true selves.
My husband uses the D&D phrase, “When one the party members gets attacked, we all roll for initiative.”

These two are absolutely adorable together and the sweetest people I’ve ever met. They had a little backyard wedding in 2020 but didn’t have any photos of themselves to document it. Sonja’s daughter gifted her mom a photo session just so they have photos together! I met them at their home and we toured the garden in the little cart, sipped lemonade on the porch, and popped a camp chair by Lucille the vintage trailer (where I had my Mother’s Day minis and might do Date Night minis!). They’ve worked so hard to create a sweet little haven in the garden. ❤️

We criticize ourselves too often as mothers, as women, as humans. But our kids love us despite our faults and flaws. We should learn to see ourselves through our children’s eyes.
